Congratulations to BWB clients the First Nations Child Caring Society and the NunatuKavut Community Council on a big win on a national stage.
The Supreme Court of Canada today handed down a unanimous decision upholding the validity of Canada’s Indigenous Child Welfare legislation.
BWB lawyers represented two intervenors in the case: Naiomi Metallic appeared for the First Nations Child Caring Society, and Jason Cooke and Ashley Hamp-Gonsalves made submissions for the NunatuKavut Community Council in support of the legislation.
Given the dark legacy of Canada’s treatment of Indigenous children this is a particularly significant win that will go a long way towards enabling Indigenous Nations' control of child and family matters.
Appearing at the Supreme Court of Canada is also a significant honour and career highlight for a lawyer. A unanimous and unequivocal win is even better. Congratulations Naiomi, Jason, and Ashley!
